It's December... and if you're from where I'm from (Maryland), the days get really short and cold. The weeks leading into the new orbit are a time of reflection- and the older we get, the more we have to reflect on, and the less significant the years seem to be. It’s as if the longer we live, the faster we feel we are going. Maybe it’s because we become increasingly aware that we are closer to our end?…Or perhaps it’s a physics thing and closer we inch towards the end, the more ‘still’ things become and the past just look like a blur. Perhaps there’s some truth to the phrase 'Life flashes before your eyes before you die' Ask anyone a older than yourself about the passing of time and they'll all say the same things : 'I can remember it like yesterday!' 'It just went by so fast..' or as Billie Armstrong so memorably sang 'twenty years have gone so fast' 'Where did time go?' These ayaat are a reminder to us, to ask this before we realize it’s too late…Where DID time go? This question often leads to regret. The shoulda woulda couldas… It’s not the best of feelings, especially when you want to accomplish so much before you peace-out. 112-113 Allah swt is telling us, quite literally, that we will be asked about our time here, and our answer will be what you’d expect us humans to say 'it was merely a day…or part of it' - basically 'it went by so fast!' Time itself is so relative that even what we perceive as a ‘full-life’ is merely a split planck in the timeline of Allah swt, the Creator of time itself. The final ayah 115 brings it home, and focuses our lens on what this whole ride is about to begin with : purpose. And a reminder that we are forever returning to Allah.

Subhanallah. After reflecting on the shortness of life the very next thing he asks is about our purpose in life and the consequence of not realizing it
