'So where are you really from?' I met a young boy at the mosque the other day, and as we chatted, I asked him where he was from. 'I was born in the UK,' he replied with a smile, 'but I'm from Iraq,' he proudly claimed. Although he had never visited his ancestral homeland, he expressed excitement at the prospect of someday experiencing the culture, cuisine, and heritage of his parents' origin. I came across this ayah where Allah informed the angels that He would create Adam (as), the first human being, to worship Allah on Earth and serve as His vicegerent to prosper the Earth. Well before Adam and Haw’a are tested, it was intended that Earth would be their destination. This prompted me to wonder: why was Adam (as) created in paradise if he was meant to be on Earth? Recalling my conversation with the young boy, it became evident that our sense of identity and connection to our heritage transcends physical borders and geographic boundaries. I surmised that perhaps Adam (as) was created in paradise to remind us that this earthly existence is temporary and fleeting, and that our true home lies beyond this world. Just as the young boy identified strongly with his cultural roots despite never having set foot in Iraq, believers can similarly find a sense of belonging in their connection to Allah, even in this transitory realm. Abdullah ibn ‘Umar said: Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) took hold of my shoulders and said, 'Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a passing traveller.' [Al-Bukhāri, 6416] We are all simply travellers on a journey towards our ultimate destination and we must be mindful not to accumulate unnecessary baggage that hinders our progress towards home. So the next time someone asks you, 'where are you really from?' take pride in your roots and proudly proclaim that you are a descendant of Adam (as), born in paradise. You are travelling on this earth and eagerly anticipate the day you can experience the delights of your true home – paradise. And if someone ever tells you to 'go back to where you came from,' you can gladly respond that you are already on your way. May Allah guide us to the right way!
