Alhamdulillah, nowadays we see a lot more Ramadan-themed books for young kids. However, many lack the foundation of this ayah. Instead, they focus solely on the physical aspects of fasting (abstaining from food and water) and the breaking of the fast (iftar). Some might sprinkle in a bit of taraweeh and fasting to feel the hardship of the poor. But where is Allah in all this? Where is the guidance of the Quran?
Can we have a Ramadan fast that is completely devoid of Allah and the revelation and guidance of the Quran? Can Ramadan simply become a cultural observance, lacking its spirituality, recognition, and celebration of Allah's final message to mankind—a message to guide them until the end of time?

Jazakallahu khair.
This is something I will be trying to work on this coming Ramadhan. Trying to dispense with the cultural practices of the month and instead focus on making the Quran and my relationship with Allah as the sole goal.
It’s been difficult. Trying to explain to loved ones that I will spend more time in the masjid, and less time with family eating and socialising. Trying to make them understand that for 1 month we sacrifice and push ourselves and then for 11 months we can enjoy delicious treats and gatherings that bring beauty to our lives.
It’s strange but I saw a video about someone explaining what ramadhan means to them as well as a plethora of cooking videos and how to ramadhan meal prep and I can’t help but feel sad about how much importance is placed on food in this month.
One even mentioned how Ramadhan is about spending time with family. I couldn’t help but draw a comparison to the celebration of Christmas. How it no longer is about celebrating Isa AS and his teachings, instead it has become cultural and all about food and time with others. May Allah protect us from reducing this blessed month to such things.
May Allah help us to truly understand the value of this month and use it to gain closeness to Allah so that we recharge our spiritual batteries to keep our iman powered until the next one. Ameen.
