There are some scholars like the erudite Muaritanian Quran scholar who says Allah SWT is talking to the muslims here. And the first great mischief of Bani Israel was not the first and second temple but actually the mischief at the time of the Prophet PBUH. What greater mischief than that!
Allah SWT gave the muslims the victory at Khaiber and this was revealed after all that. Jews outnumbered muslim in Yathrib at one time eventually the muslims took over.
According to some historians it was 1/3 jewish at the time of muslims arrival.
The second mischief is about a future event yet to come in relation to the time of Prophet PBUH. Second mischief is now.m according to great Mauritanian Scholar and he says verse 7 Allah SWT is addressing muslims and that the face of the muslims will be saddened.
Sheikh Ali Ataie gives a slightly different interpretation and thinks first event is in past and second event is to come and that Allah SWT is addressing jews in verse 7 . He took the position of the great Quran scholar in Jordan Sheikh Ali.
Fascinating verses. And verse 104 points to a gathering of a diverse set of jews in the land of israel near end times just as in now.
You can watch Dr Yasir Qadhi sum up various positions here.
So now what do you think? Who is Allah SWT addressing in verse 7? Is it Jews or Muslims? Are the two events of mischief of Jews both in past? Or is one in the future? Was the first mischief what they did with Prophet PBUH?
