The Jonestown Massacre occurred in the late 1970's and it involved the mass suicide of over 900 individuals by order of cult leader, Jim Jones. I studied the behavior of this cult and others during my undergraduate studies. The stories are tragic and left me wondering: wasn't there anyone that questioned the logic of their own beliefs? Even a belief that is held closely and dearly, isn't above the examination of a critical eye. The notion of 'doubt' is often received negatively in faith circles, but my impression of the Quran is that it welcomes a critical, reflective mind. So sometimes I ask myself the question I wish they would have entertained: How do I know for sure that this is, in fact, the truth? The answer, for me, is multifaceted, but this ayah, combined with minimal knowledge of the Arabic language, lays the foundation: 'If this was from anyone except Allah, you would have found within it many inconsistencies.' How could it be that the Prophet (SAW) predicted the defeat of Rome years before it happened without Divine inspiration? How could it be that the Prophet (SAW) could describe fetal development or planet and star movement without Divine Inspiration? How could the Prophet (SAW) have succinctly codified inheritance laws in a page without Divine Inspiration? The linguistic miracles trump all of the above. Layers upon layers of perfection, the deeper you look the more you find. May Allah (SWT) allow us to find all of the reassurance we need from his Book.
