**فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ۝5** **إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ۝6**

**“Surely, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.”** — **Surah Ash-Sharh [94:5–6]**

These two verses are among the most comforting promises in the entire Qur’an. Allah repeats the same message twice:

**“Surely, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.”**

But there is something important to understand here.

In Arabic, when the word **“ال” (Al)** is added to a noun, it becomes specific, meaning it becomes a **definite noun (Ism Ma‘rifah)**.

In both verses, the same word is repeated:

**الْعُسْرِ → الْعُسْرِ**

Meaning: **the hardship** — the same specific hardship is being referred to again.

Then we have:

**يُسْرًا — ease**

The word **“يُسْرًا”** does not have **“ال”**, so it is **indefinite (Nakirah)**, meaning **an ease**.

And again, it is repeated in both verses:

**يُسْرًا → يُسْرًا**

From this, the scholars of Tafsir have pointed out a beautiful linguistic and rhetorical meaning: the same hardship is mentioned twice as **الْعُسْرِ**, while ease is mentioned each time as the indefinite **يُسْرًا**.

This is why a well-known interpretation is:

**One hardship cannot overcome two eases.**

In other words, there may be **one hardship, but two or even many forms of ease** accompanying it.

Some people make a small mistake when translating these verses as:

**“Indeed, after every hardship comes ease.”**

There is a subtle difference here.

The word Allah uses is:

**مَعَ — “with”**

It means **together with, alongside, accompanying**.

For example, when someone gives us an invitation card, it may say:

**“بمع اہل و عیال”**

Meaning: **“Come along with your family.”**

It does not mean:

**“Come after your family.”**

So the real beauty of these verses is that Allah does not merely say that ease will come **after** hardship.

He says that **ease is with the hardship**.

Ease—or even multiple forms of ease—has already been placed alongside the difficulty, so that a believer does not lose heart or fall into despair.

There may be **one hardship, but many forms of ease.**

And this is another beautiful quality of the Qur’an, and especially of Allah’s way of speaking to us: whenever Allah mentions His punishment, He often mentions His mercy alongside it. He gives us **fear and hope together**, so that we neither become careless nor fall into despair.

As my respected teacher often says:

**A person does things in two ways: out of fear or out of love and longing.**

A person may perform good deeds because they fear Allah’s punishment, or they may strive to make their deeds beautiful because they long for Allah’s mercy and are hopeful of His reward.

Where Allah mentions **Hell for the disbelievers**, He also describes **Paradise for the believers**.

When Allah describes the Day of Judgment or the conditions of Hell, He also brings before us the gardens of Paradise, its rivers, and its blessings—so that our hearts do not become hopeless.

When a difficulty comes into our lives, we often focus only on the pain we are experiencing. But we fail to recognize the forms of ease that Allah has placed alongside that difficulty.

And that ease can take many different forms.

Perhaps we begin walking on the path of guidance.

Perhaps we learn patience.

Perhaps we learn gratitude.

Perhaps our hearts become more open and our chests become more spacious.

Perhaps Allah grants us honor.

And perhaps, most importantly, our names are being mentioned in the heavens.

The greater the test, the greater the opportunity for our name to be raised among the angels through our patience and steadfastness.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ went through extremely difficult periods. He faced rejection, grief, hardship, and opposition. Yet within those very trials, Allah continued to grant him help, guidance, strength, and spiritual expansion.

These verses remind a believer **not to judge their situation too quickly**.

Pain can affect the way a person thinks and sees things. Sometimes, because of our pain, we are unable to notice the mercy and blessings that Allah has placed around us.

But remember this:

**There may be only one hardship—so do not be afraid.**

You do not know what Allah may write for you in return for enduring it with patience.

You do not know among which beloved servants your name may be written because of the patience you showed.

You do not know how your patience may raise your name in the heavens.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

**“Know that there is much good in being patient with what you dislike. Victory comes with patience, relief comes with distress, and with hardship comes ease.”** — *Arba‘een an-Nawawi, Hadith 19*

So perhaps the question is not only:

**“Why am I going through this difficulty?”**

Perhaps we should also ask:

**“What form of ease has Allah placed alongside my difficulty that I have not yet fully noticed or appreciated?”**
