Something so immensely powerful in the Qur’an Subhan’Allah. Lets see some examples of how Allah calls upon His prophets (peace be upon them all) in the Qur’an: يَـٰزَكَرِيَّآ (19:7) - Ya Zakariyya يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ (2:35) - Ya Adamu يَـٰيَحْيَىٰ (19:12) - Ya Yahya يَـٰنُوحُ (11:48) - Ya Noohu Yet when Allah , The Most High , calls upon His Messenger, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, He does not use his name, but rather He says: يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ (33:1) - Ya ayyuha annabiyyu يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُزَّمِّلُ (73:1) - Ya ayyuha almuzzammil {O you who wraps himself [in clothing]} يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ (74:1) - Ya ayyuha almuddaththir {O you who covers himself [with a garment]} For instance ; the Prophet (peace be upon him) had been terrified when he had suddenly seen the Angel Gabriel, and had returned hastily home and asked the people of the house to cover him up, so Allah addressed him with Ya ayyuhal-Muddaththiru meaning O you who covers himself [with a garment! This is so beautiful and powerful at the same time . O you who covers himself [with a garment] قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ Arise and warn. (74:1-2) As if saying : O My dear servant, why have you lain down thus enwrapped? You have been put under the burden of a great mission: you must now arise from your solitude to perform this mission with resolution and courage. No where in the Qur’an you will find Allah saying Ya Muhammad (pbuh). Allah does not call upon His Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by his first name, rather He calls upon him with his titles out of love and compassion signifying his noble status. Its not to downplay other prophets (peace be upon them all) but to highlight the esteem of the final Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Neither did the Sahabas ever used to say Ya Muhammad (pbuh) . Allah set a different standard of how to respect Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and calling Ya Muhammad (pbuh) was below that standard . The places where Qur’an does use the word Muhammad (pbuh) i.e 4 times, it does so by mentioning 'rasool Allah': مَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِنْ رِجَالِكُمْ وَلَٰكِنْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ (33:40) 'Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets. And ever is Allah , of all things, Knowing.' (48:29) 'Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.' (3:144) 'Muḥammad is no more than a messenger' وَآمَنُوا بِمَا نُزِّلَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ (47:2) 'As for those who attained to faith and did righteous works and believed in what was revealed to Muhammad' Note : The word Muhammad(pbuh) is used in (47:2) but it says revelation that came to him meaning He is the messenger by Revelation. If Allah wanted to call him (pbuh) directly by his name Allah could have but even Allah The Most High did not call him (pbuh) by his name directly. Subhan’Allah ! Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): 'Make not the calling of the Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) among you as your calling one of another' [al-Noor 24:63]. And Allah knows best. (Notes from Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan's class. May Allah protect him).
