'No one wants to make their loved ones sick.' I read this headline today and thought of Ibrahim (AS)'s words as he considered the eventuality of illness. ٍHe attributes illness to himself, as some mufassireen point out, for adab with Allah. In other words, he knows that both sickness and health are from Allah, but out of his good opinion and good manners chose to associate illness to himself and healing to Allah. My take away from this is that Allah (SWT) is in control of all things--healing and illness. In light of this, I have concerns about the notion of carrying guilt for 'making someone sick.' The criminalization of 'being sick' seems to run contrary to Prophet (SAW)'s optimism towards sickness being a source of forgiveness and his frequent advice to visit sick people. Thoughts are welcome. May Allah (SWT) keep us in good health and grant us shifa when we get sick.
