The reason for the revelation of Surat Al-Jinn is so profound. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had just lost the two most important people in his life- Abu Talib and Khadija, may Allah be pleased with her. This happens at the heels of the three year boycott Quraysh imposes on Banu Hashim. In a matter of a few weeks, Sayyidna Muhammad (pbuh) lost both his external as well as his internal support and it was a time that came to be called, 'The Year of Sadness.' Abu Lahab becomes the chief of Banu Hashim and does not grant his nephew the tribe’s protection. This leaves the Prophet with no other recourse but to go outside of Mecca and find protection elsewhere. He ventures to Al-Taif where he is insulted, shamed, physically harmed, and tells Aisha (ra) later on that it was the worst day of his life, even worse than Uhud. When he leaves Taif, he comes upon a valley where a servant boy by the name of ‘Addas (a Christian from Iraq) gives him some grapes. The Prophet (sas) starts with bismillah which catches Addas’ attention since the people of Taif do not use that language. When the Prophet (sas) asks where he is from, Addas says 'Iraq,' where the Prophet (sas) responds with 'the land of Yunus (as).' Addas is so taken aback that he becomes Muslim on the spot. As the Prophet (sas) is reciting Quran during Salatul Fajr in this valley, the jinn notice that there is a block in the information that they receive from earth. They go to see what is causing it and they come upon the Prophet (sas) reciting Quran. They are completely immersed in the recitation and some of them embrace Islam. SubhanAllah, even though the people of Taif rejected the Prophet, a Christian servant from Iraq embraces Islam and a group from the ghayb also embrace Islam. It really teaches us the lesson that we have no idea what our striving and effort, with the help of Allah, can lead to. We have such a limited awareness of the mechanics of our actions- we’re little puzzle pieces that connect to other small pieces but Allah has the bird’s eye view. So, keep planting those seeds, my dear brothers and sisters. May Allah allow us to witness every positive impact of our actions on the Day of Judgment, and completely erase and forgive our negative ones!
