Allah says in Surah al-Qamar, verse 46,

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ But the Hour is their appointed time- the Hour is more severe and bitter

The word أَمَرُّ ‘bitter’ is the superlative form of the word مُرٌّ. It comes from the root م ر, which is said to have two root meanings: 1. bitterness 2. to pass, to elapse.

Scholars have commented that the bitterness mentioned in this verse is referring to the disbelievers on the Day of Judgement.

It is the strongest, most bitter of all and will never pass.

But to blend the two connotations of the root, serves as a beautiful linguistic reminder that just as every hardship is accompanied and followed by ease, every other bitterness shall surely pass, particularly any we encounter in this life. So let us strive to ensure we do not follow them up with a bitterness of the type that shall never pass.
