Understanding al-Fatihah Any Muslim who recites Surah al-Fatihah at least seventeen times each day would understand the importance of acknowledging favor and excellence—and the ultimate excellence belongs to God. In Surah al-Fatihah, we acknowledge His favor upon us, and from this foundational understanding, we are grateful to anyone who has a right upon us or deals with us in excellence, for whoever does not thank the people does not thank God. Surah al-Fatihah helps us move on from being held captive by despair to the relief of having hope in God’s infinite mercy, repeating the verse: the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful [1:3] Someone who recites Surah al-Fatihah so many times a day would always be working for the afterlife, never being neglectful of it, as it can either be the realm of true life and everlasting bliss, or the realm of a disgraceful punishment. Reciting Surah al-Fatihah helps us stay determined to worship God, reliant on Him, and seeking His help, for all of this comes only with God’s help. We distinguish ourselves from the path of the Jews and Christians, identifying with the prophets, the paragons of truth (ṣiddeeqeen), the martyrs, and the righteous people whom God blessed. Surah al-Fatihah teaches us to treat others as they deserve to be treated—to be loving and compassionate toward the believers, and likewise toward others without any blind allegiance or injustice.
