My thoughts on the dangers of Shirk at a younger age troubled me when I was not a Muslim during my days of ignorance. Az-Zumar Chapter 39 Verse 15 revived my hope towards the awful days I spent without Allah, without putting Allah first; what blindness it was to live without Allah indeed. There was a time when I became very successful in a popular business. Things were going well, and I had many colleagues who were running the same business as me. They became envious because I was more successful than them. They started planning ways to slow me down from overshadowing and excelling more than them. We had all been living in the same community up until now. During those days, I met an old man who stopped me and started telling me what would happen in the future if I did not discover the dangers of Shirk. He said that I would fall and that my colleagues running the same business would succeed in slowing me down and overtaking the whole business. He advised me to wake up and start investing to back myself up financially if something went wrong in the future. I blindly listened to him. A few months later, I met a young lady who was crying beside the Imo State University housing area, called Workslayout. I approached her and began to ask what the matter was. My mother always told me that I am a good person but should not allow people to mistreat me because of my goodness. The young lady told me that her uncle, who was paying for her schooling, had rejected her due to business challenges. She had no one to take care of her and had not eaten all day. Her father had recently died, and her mother was weak, taking care of her other siblings. She felt like dying for no reason anymore. I felt compassion for her and took her to a pharmacy with the little money I had. She received an injection and other good drugs. It took several days for her to complete all the treatments. I gradually began to take care of her, paying her school fees, rent, and other expenses. Sometimes, I sent money to her mother in the village. Her mother began to have a close relationship with me and always prayed for me for taking care of her daughter. Her classmates at the university began to notice my actions and asked her about me. She told them I was just a kind person helping her. They became envious and started calling me after stealing my phone number from her. Despite this, I did everything wholeheartedly for the sake of Allah, even though I did not know Allah at that time. Remembering the prediction of the future from the old man, I made a plan to open a small business to back myself up financially. I gave the money I saved to the young lady to help start the business. However, she vanished a few months later, and I realized she was never a student but a person hustling to take care of her family in the village. I tried all phone numbers, including her mother's, but none were reachable. I was left in shock, unable to speak to anyone for nearly a year. My business suffered, and I faced setbacks. I lost everything and felt humiliated. I lived in the same community where the university housing was, and I had to face the people who took over the business. I changed from being rich to poor, with my appearance and quality of life deteriorating. Despite these challenges, I found solace in Allah. These experiences made me skillful in speaking and writing about people's lives and well-being on social media. Many of my age-mates, who could not feed themselves without my help, are now successful. They avoid me, and I feel humiliated. I now understand that believing in the stranger's prediction was Shirk, the most tremendous sin. I wish I had known the dangers of Shirk back then. I might have continued to excel. But Allah knows best, and I trust His will for my life. May His will be done perfectly in my life, Ameen, InshAllah.
