Bismillah

As humans, our focus tends to be more on our outer coverings than on our inside.

We put more effort on looking good, wearing beautiful clothing and especially when we are outside in the public we ensure that we are looking good. However, unfortunately we forget to take the same care of our hearts.

Keeping our bodies clean and being neat and tidy is important as cleanliness is half of iman however the same cleanliness is required for our hearts.

For when we don't focus on the heart, it gets dirty too and the dirt of sins is difficult to remove unless we put daily effort on cleansing it.

Just like we adorn our bodies with beautiful clothing we need to adorn our hearts with the remembrance of Allah.

We need to make our hearts shine with the light of Allah.

And just as we perfume our bodies with different scents, we need to scent our hearts with the beautiful words of our Lord.

And Allah knows best.

A reminder first and foremost for myself.

قال الحسن البصري: (هو الذنبُ على الذنب، حتى يعمى القلبُ فيموت). فإيَّاك والتهاونَ بصغار الذنوب، فإنها تجتمع على العبد حتى تُهلكَه.

رَانَ ... خطورة الذنوب على القلوب وما تحدثه فيها من ضعف ومرض؛ فلا تميز الحق من الباطل.

يَكْسِبُونَ ... كسب الجوارح سواءً أكان خيرًا أم شرًا، حلالًا أم حرامًا، يؤثر على نور القلوب وحياتها.

هو الذنب على الذنب حتى يسود القلب؛ قال مجاهد: "هو الرجل يذنب الذنب فيحيط الذنب بقلبه، ثم يذنب الذنب فيحيط الذنب بقلبه؛ حتى تغشى الذنوب قلبه"... قال بكر بن عبد الله: "إن العبد إذا أذنب صار في قلبه كوخزة الإبرة، ثم إذا أذنب ثانيًا صار كذلك، ثم إذا كثرت الذنوب صار القلب كالمنخل أو كالغربال؛ لا يعي خيرًا ولا يثبت فيه صلاح". القرطبي: 22/143. السؤال: ما الران؟ وكيف يصل إلى قلب العبد؟

عن أبي هريرة، قال: قال رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم-: «إذا أذنب العبد نكت في قلبه نكتة سوداء؛ فإن تاب صقل منها، فإن عاد عادت حتى تعظم في قلبه. فذلك الران الذي قال الله: (كلا بل ران على قلوبهم ما كانوا يكسبون)». الطبري: 24/286. السؤال: وضح أثر التوبة على الران الذي يصيب القلب.

A Heart Assessment If God is close then why do we feel disconnected? Why do we experience a perceived distance from God? The Quran has a straightforward answer to this: No, verily their hearts are encrusted with what they have done. [83:14] Sins and ambivalence create a physical crust on our heart, and this is why we feel detached. I was thinking that perhaps our character, emotions, and actions all have a silent role to play with regards to how well we are able to understand and reflect on the meanings of the Quran.

The reason that I say that is, we know that the heart plays a vital role in reflection (tadabbur) because over here Allah says:

'Then do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?' (47:24)

Therefore, if the heart becomes stained with sins, greed, jealousy, arrogance, or other negative attributes, then this may all have a proportionately negative impact on how well we are able to reflect and benefit from the Quran.

Not all that burns is a punishment. Not all that feels acidic is destruction.

Allah’s mercy and light are always around us...

But my heart wasn’t ready to receive it. It was layered with rust—sins, distractions, desires, evil thoughts, heedlessness.

Then, by divine decree, Allah placed me in an acidic medium.

It burned—but not to destroy me. It burned to dissolve the rust I had allowed to build over my heart.
