In the beginning Ayaat of Surah Al-Mu’minoon Allah describes the successful believers as having 7 qualities. The first of these qualities is Salaah. Allah says:

‎*ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى صَلَاتِهِمْ خَٰشِعُونَ*

The very first quality of a successful believer, is that in their prayer they have khushoo’. The big question here is what is khushoo’?

Khushoo’ is being in a state of total concentration out of fear and humility of the One you are present before, where nothing distracts you whilst you are talking to your Creator in Salaah. When you realise that nothing else matters and nothing is more important. It is something realised in the hearts but it's effect will be felt in the body too. Imagine a really good movie or TV show, you become immersed in it and everything else seems less important. What can be more important than conversing with Our Master?

There are many ways of achieving khushoo’ in your salaah, here are some pointers to help you to achieve it Insha’Allah. - Realise who you are standing in front of. We behave ourselves when we stand in front of human authority, such as the police officer or the headteacher, but what about when we stand in front of the greatest authority, Allah? The King of Kings, The Master of All of His creation. - Understand what Salaah is and it’s importance. The athaan makes it clear, come to Salaah, come to Success. The Messenger (ﷺ) said that Salaah is the key to Jannah(and that the key to Salaah is Wudhu). - Wearing nice clothes and apply perfume(for ladies only at home) - Not moving around without reason. Relax your limbs. - Keeping your gaze fixed on where it should be - Not thinking about worldly affairs such as work, cooking, friends etc. It’s a good idea to not have anything on you which could be a distraction, like a phone, leave it at home or in the car. - Understand what you are reciting when standing, in ruku, in sajdah etc, even if it means reciting little but knowing what it means. It would be better to recite one small surah knowing it’s meaning, then reciting large portions without knowing what you are saying. - Take your time. Do not rush. If we could see the reward of Salaah and the mercy that Allah is sending down upon us when we pray we would never want to leave. Know that the Allah is in control of whatever it is your are rushing your Salaah to get to.

These are a few tips to try and achieve khushoo’ in your Salaah. May Allah make us of those who have khushoo’ in all of our acts of worship to Him. Ameen.
