The excellence of each word in the Quran is a science in of itself and of a miraculous nature in its perfection. So many lessons can be derived from each word, and even moreso when compared to other words that pretty much have the same meaning, or does it? Superficially two different words may usually be translated in the same manner, yet the richness and depth of each cannot be captured and understood unless one takes a deeper dive. An example often given of, - One who may recite and listen to the Quran void of understanding its meaning, - As, opposed to one who delves into the language. 1. Close your eyes and imagine the serene sight of a beautiful view of the ocean, looking into the horizon. The beauty, the magnificence, the grandeur, the awe. That's the surface level beauty. 2. Now imagine diving into the depths of the ocean, and finding in it pearls and various unique creation. It's entirely another realm, unbeknownst to us of its existence and beauty. This is what most of us miss out on, hence we lose out in experiencing the live miracle of the Quran. So much so that we seldom feel touched and mesmerised by it. Losing out on gaining insight. Take this for an example. 'Mahmood' & 'Hameed' would generally be translated in a very similar, if not the same manner. Meaning, praised/praiseworthy. Yet, the meanings of these two words have their own unique characteristics. 'Mahmood': 1. One who is praised, 2. It requires someone to praise, 3. Not necessarily something which is constant. Whereas, 'Hameed', denotes 1. longevity or constancy, 2. Doesn't require anyone to praise it, it is praiseworthy in of itself. 3. Permanence. Another word used in the Quran, in the same pattern of, 'Mahmood' & 'Hameed', is 'Marqoom' & 'Raqeem' - 'Raqeem' meaning 'inscription', is used in Suratul Kahf, referring to the 'inscription' in the story of the young sleepers who sought refuge in the cave. In existence for many years. Etched in history til the end of time. - 'Marqoom' is when Allah says in the Quran, 'Kitaabun-Marqoom' The inscription referring to the Angels that write down our deeds. The pattern of the word 'Marqoom' does NOT necessitate permanency. Our misdeeds that are written by the Angels is not necessarily something which will remain in our book of evil deeds. How so? Taubah & Istighfaar can and does erase our misdeeds that have been documented and inscribed by the Angels. It can be totally wiped out. May Allah enable us all to leave this world in a state of taubah and Istighfaar, with a blank slate when it comes to our evil deeds. Aameen!
