When the messengers lost all hope and realized that they had been dismissed as liars, Our help came to them: We saved whoever We pleased, but Our punishment will not be turned away from guilty people. لا يَغُرَّنَّهم تَمادِيهِمْ فِيما هم فِيهِ مِنَ الدَّعَةِ والرَّخاءِ فَإنَّ مَن قَبْلَهم قَدْ أُمْهِلُوا حَتّى يَئِسَ الرُّسُلُ مِنَ النَّصْرِ عَلَيْهِمْ في الدُّنْيا أوْ مِن إيمانِهِمْ لِانْهِماكِهِمْ في الكُفْرِ وتَمادِيهِمْ في الطُّغْيانِ مِن غَيْرِ وازِعٍ Imam Al Alusi explains in his commentary 'The [wicked] should not be deceived by the ease and comfort they enjoy. For those before them were also given respite for a time, until the messengers lost hope of victory over them in this world, or of their ever believing, because of how deeply they were immersed in disbelief and how persistently they indulged in tyranny without any restraint. Allah's promise is true. It is coming. Brace for victory soon inshaAllah.

* مهما كان المجرمون في قوة ومنعة ظاهرة، فليس ذلك برادٍّ عنهم شيئًا من عذاب الله.

* إن نصر الله لن يُشرق من آفاق الرخاء، بل سيبزغ نوره من ظلمات البلاء، فدعوات الأنبياء لم تنتصر إلا بعد مقاساة الشدة، وتطاول المدة.

* الشدائد طريق الدعوات الحقة، غير أن الشدة لا تدوم وإن طالت، فإذا يئس الناسُ من كلّ الأسباب الظاهرة التي يتعلقون بها جاء النصر من الله وحده.

* كم تُكسِبُ الحوادث المؤلمة المؤمن من حظوظ جليلة، كنصر مرتقب، وثواب مُدَّخر، أو تطهير من ذنب! فعلامَ اليأسُ؟!

اسْتَيْأَسَ... الرسل قد بلغوا الرسالة ونصحوا، والرسل بشر يصيبهم اليأس والحزن، والابتلاء.

كُذِبُواْ... لا يعاقب الله إلا بعد إقامة الحجة، ولا أحد أعذر من الله، والرسول لابد أن يُكَذَّب من قومه.

نَصْرُنَا... النصر مع الصبر، ونصر الله للمرسلين وأتباعهم لا يتخلف وإن تأخر، ولا بد للنصر من أسباب.

بَأْسُنَا... إثبات عذاب الله لمن كذب رسله، وعذابه شامل للدارين، وإذا حقت كلمة العذاب فلا رادَّ لها.

الْمُجْرِمِين... تحذير من الإجرام، وأشد أنواع الجرم تكذيب الله ورسله، والشرك جريمة لا تغتفر إلا بالتوبة.

'And when the messengers despaired and their people thought the messengers had been denied help, Our help came to them ˹at last˺. We then saved whoever We willed, and Our punishment is never averted from the wicked people'. (110) The word for despair in Arabic is اليأس, and اسْتَيْئَسَ is a hyperbolic expression that conveys the meaning of intensified despair. The second of these two words is used in this verse, which comes at the end of Surah Yusuf and appears after the context of Ya’qub (AS) advising his sons to never give up hope, even after the second brother, Binyamin, was remanded and taken away from his father. 'Until, when the messengers have despaired, and thought that they were belied, Our help came to them.' 💭 This verse used to perplex me. It is inconceivable that anyone with firm belief in Allah would despair in Him, so how could the messengers ever despair? But then, years later, I found my mother slapping Shayṭān’s hasty reading of this verse out of me - my mother, ‘Āishah (rA), that is. She said regarding this verse, 'I seek Allah’s refuge! PSA: Don't worry about how rigged it is. It's always rigged against the righteous - that's where heroes are forged. That's how you get a spot on the VIP list in Jannah inshallah.

It was rigged against Prophet Muhammad (S). It was rigged against Prophet Musa (AS). It was rigged against Prophet Dawud (AS). It was rigged against Prophet Jesus (AS). It was rigged against Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

...You get the picture. It's ALWAYS rigged against the righteous. And just when it seems most hopeless: evil collapses, and good prevails.

DON'T STRESS about it. That part isn't in your hands. Just keep climbing. This story ends just like the above ones did, inshallah. You will see.
