The Qur'an showcases incredible precision even in its choice of singular and plural words. One example of this is in Surah al-Baqarah, verse 19,

أَوْ كَصَيِّبٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فِيهِ ظُلُمَـٰتٌۭ وَرَعْدٌۭ وَبَرْقٌۭ يَجْعَلُونَ أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِم مِّنَ ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِ حَذَرَ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ مُحِيطٌۢ بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ 'Or like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allāh is encompassing of the disbelievers.'

Although not indicated in the common translations, In this verse, Allah actually uses the plural form for 'darkness' - ظلمات - while using the singular form for 'thunder' رعد and 'lightning' برق.

The reason for this is that thunder and lightning both originate from a single source. Therefore, the singular form highlights their unified nature and the synchronization between these powerful natural phenomena.

Darkness, on the other hand, can stem from various sources like nightfall, rain, cloud formation, eclipses, and more. So by employing the plural form, the Qur'an emphasizes the multitude of causes for darkness.

The significance of this usage lies not only in the Qur’an’s linguistic accuracy but also in the deeper wisdom embedded within the verse. It reminds us of the complexity and diversity in creation, while also highlighting the unity and harmony within Allah's divine design. So as we marvel at the intricacies of language found in the Qur'an and its profound meanings, let us also reflect on the boundless knowledge and encompassing power of our Creator.

This was interesting and thought-provoking, masha'Allah. Jazakallahu khair for sharing. By the way, as we know, this is a parable in reference to the hypocrites specifically. And I think basically it's telling us how fearful and how lost they are. I've shared another reflection of the statement 'They think that every shout is against them' (in Surah 63:04) where I discuss the lurking fear and paranoia that they have from a psychological perspective:
