When Yunus AS left his people without divine command telling him to do so, he put his frustration at his people above his responsibility from Allah. The whale or fish swallowing Yunus AS was in a way Allah giving him an opportunity to come back to Him. Whenever we go through trial or hardship, it serves to increase us in Iman and seek Allah's forgiveness and pleasure. And here, Allah says that had Yunus AS not been of the ones who constantly glorified Allah, then he would have remained there. This teaches us that habits we form in times of ease will aid us in times of hardship. If we are in the habit of praising Allah in times of ease, then that habit would prepare us for the times of hardship when we seek that closeness and help from Allah. Allah mentions in the Quran stories of Prophets who gave dawah to their people, and were destroyed/punished because of their disbelief. However, Yunus AS people became believers. And what is beautiful about this story was that it shows the importance of patience, especially when giving dawah. We do not get to write people off and say they are doomed because it is Allah who guides. Had Yunus practiced patience, he could've seen that Allah chose to guide them instead of punish them. In Prophet Muhammed's [SAW] farewell sermon, he tasked the Muslim ummah with the responsibility of dawah. Giving dawah is not something you do once and think you have fulfilled that responsibility. It is an unending obligation that requires patience.
