The Event of Mount Tur: A Significant Moment in Islamic History

Introduction

The event of Mount Tur refers to a pivotal moment when Allah spoke directly to Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and revealed the divine commandments. Mount Tur, also known as Mount Sinai, is a sacred site where Prophet Musa received the Torah and where a significant encounter between Allah and the Children of Israel took place.

The Revelation to Prophet Musa (Moses)

Mount Tur holds great importance in Islamic history because it was the location where Allah spoke to Prophet Musa. According to the Quran, Musa was called to the mountain for a period of forty nights to receive divine commandments. “And when Musa came at the appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, ‘My Lord, show Yourself to me.’” (Surah Al-A’raf: 143)

After receiving the divine commandments, Musa returned to his people. However, during his absence, the Children of Israel fell into idol worship by creating and worshipping a golden calf. Upon his return, Musa condemned their actions and reminded them of their covenant with Allah.

As part of their repentance, Allah caused the mountain to be raised above them as a sign of His power, making them pledge to uphold the covenant.

“And We raised the Mount above them for their covenant and said, ‘Enter the gate while prostrating.’” (Surah An-Nisa: 154)

The Punishment and Mercy

When the Children of Israel disobeyed, Allah caused a violent earthquake to strike them as a punishment. However, through the intercession of Musa, Allah showed mercy and revived them, giving them another chance to follow His guidance.

“And We caused the clouds to shade you and sent down upon you manna and quails, saying, ‘Eat from the good things We have provided for you.’” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 57)
