A convert came up to me and said, 'I think I have a problem with my prayer.' Me: 'How so?' 'Well you know how you talk about how important it is to focus in your prayer and not be distracted and think about anything outside of the prayer, I don't get any of those distractions. Is there anything wrong?' Me: 'What do you mean?' Him: 'I mean, when I enter the prayer, I actually get lost in it. Everything goes away, it's jut me and Allah. I don't think of anything else. It's when I'm at my happiest and it's when I'm most present. I'm not as present when I'm outside the prayer, and I can't wait to go back. My body actually starts to anticipate the prayer. It starts with wudhu really, I start to feel it then. When my body starts to get anxious that's when I realize that it's time for the prayer. It doesn't fail... Is there anything wrong with that?' Me: Umm, I think you've just described a state of khushu' (concentration) in the prayer that we would all aspire to attain. That the prayer be your place of solace, happiness, and where you taste its sweetness. I should be complaining to you about my prayer, not the other way around! He left but not before his question reminded me of how Allah chooses some over others irrespective of how long someone has been a Muslim. He bestows His Grace on whoever He wishes. May Allah bless us with the sweetness of the prayer.
