‘Uthmân b. Mawhib narrates: A man came to perform Hajj to the Kaaba. He saw some people sitting and asked: 'Who are these people sitting?' They said: 'These are Quraysh.' He asked: 'Who is the old man?' They said: 'Ibn ‘Umar.' He came to him and said: 'I will ask you something, will you speak to me?' Then he asked: 'I implore you by the sanctity of this House - do you know that ‘Uthmân fled on the day of Uhud?' He said: 'Yes.' He asked: 'Do you know that he did not attend the Battle of Badr?' He said: 'Yes.' He asked: 'Do you know that he stayed behind from the pledge of Ridhwân and did not attend it?' He replied: 'Yes.' Then he said: 'Allahu Akbar.' Ibn ‘Umar then said: 'Come, let me inform you and clarify to you what you asked me about. As for his fleeing on the day of Uhud, I testify that Allah pardoned him. As for his being absent on the day of Badr, he was married to the Messenger of Allah’s (saws) daughter who was ill. The Prophet (saws) said to him: ‘You will receive the same reward and spoils of anyone who attended Badr.’ As for his being absent from the pledge of Ridhwân, the pledge of Ridhwân took place after ‘Uthmân left for Makkah - and had there been anyone in the valley of Makkah more honorable than ‘Uthmân, he would have sent them instead. The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, holding out his right hand: ‘This is the hand of ‘Uthmân,’ and then struck his hand and said: ‘This is for ‘Uthmân.’ Now leave with that' [Authentic: Narrated by al-Bukhari (4066)]
