Prayer nurtures the soul Prayer is our spiritual workout. We can never feel contentment in our hearts if we satiate our bodies while starving our souls. Our materialistic culture has eased everything for the body, paving the way for its every comfort, delight, and beautification. At the same time, it has advanced a generation of tight chests, unstable psyches, empty hearts, and turbulent souls. It has produced people who are uncomfortable with their own selves due to the imbalance of our overfed bodies and starving souls. We now see a spread of mental and social pathologies, diseases and complications, not the least of which is the rise of suicide and violent killings. Many have resorted to living a life without meaning or purpose, numbed to any profound spiritual feeling in their heart. Prayer creates for the believer an assured heart, a percipient soul, and a balanced self. It wipes away our shortcomings so that our conscience is at ease and not overburdened by its own guilt, by the will of Allah. In this way we understand what is narrated by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad that Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Al-Hanafiyyah said, 'I visited with Abu Bakr a relative of ours from the Ansar, and the time of prayer entered. He said: ‘Bring me some water to make wuḍu’ _so that I may pray and find relief.’ He saw our surprise at his manner of speaking, so he explained that he heard Allah’s Prophet ﷺ say: ‘_Rise, Bilal, and relieve us with the prayer.' In an alternative narration, also cited in Imam Ahmad’s _Musnad, Hudhayfa bin Al-Yaman said, 'If Allah’s Prophet ﷺ was distressed about something he would pray.' Prayer should be the rich oasis where we find relaxation and enjoyment. Prayer is where we experience the company of God and quench our hearts with the love of The Exalted. This sanctuary of prayer is what bolsters our certainty in God’s justice. It makes us hungry for His favor, hopeful in his Mercy, and never despairing of His forbearance and grace - just as God, the Exalted, says, Those who have faith and whose hearts find peace in the remembrance of God— truly it is in the remembrance of God that hearts find peace.
