Reflect on the Shortness of Life Anytime you feel your Iman is low and you feel lazy to do acts of worship, you must reflect on death. Thinking about death is challenging but very helpful. Think of your nafs like a child that requires discipline when disobedient to stay firm on the righteous path. It needs reminding about the inevitable burial underground and the suffocating space in the grave. Make it a goal to reflect on life for at least a few minutes each day. Think about what Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) says about this life in the Quran. Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) describes worldly life in the Quran as: اِعۡلَمُوۡۤا اَنَّمَا الۡحَيٰوةُ الدُّنۡيَا لَعِبٌ وَّلَهۡوٌ وَّزِيۡنَةٌ وَّتَفَاخُرٌۢ بَيۡنَكُمۡ وَتَكَاثُرٌ فِى الۡاَمۡوَالِ وَالۡاَوۡلَادِؕ كَمَثَلِ غَيۡثٍ اَعۡجَبَ الۡكُفَّارَ نَبَاتُهٗ ثُمَّ يَهِيۡجُ فَتَرٰٮهُ مُصۡفَرًّا ثُمَّ يَكُوۡنُ حُطٰمًاؕ وَفِى الۡاٰخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ شَدِيۡدٌ ۙ وَّمَغۡفِرَةٌ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ وَرِضۡوَانٌؕ وَمَا الۡحَيٰوةُ الدُّنۡيَاۤ اِلَّا مَتَاعُ الۡغُرُوۡرِ 'Know well that the life of this world is merely sport and diversion and adornment and an object of your boasting with one another, and a rivalry in the multiplication of riches and children. Its likeness is that of rain: when it produces vegetation it delights the tillers. But then it withers and you see it turn yellow, and then it crumbles away. In the Hereafter there is (either) grievous chastisement (or) forgiveness from Allah and (His) good pleasure. The life of this world is nothing but delusion.' -Surah Al-Hadid, 57:20 The above Ayah is divided into three parts: 1. Definition of worldly life 2. Parable of worldly life 3. Reminder of eternal life The two words Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) uses to describe worldly life are the words 'لَعِبٌ' and 'لَهۡوٌ'. The word 'لَهۡوٌ' means what we do when we are bored to pass the time. The word 'لَعِبٌ' means what we enjoy doing, but it is still a waste of time. Then comes the parable of worldly life and this is how Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) describes life most of the time. 'Rain comes down, beautiful flowers and vegetation grow, and then they become dry and die.' The final part of the Ayah is the reminder of the afterlife. 'The more you remember death, the more you are focused and less distracted.' Reflect on the shortness of life because when you meet Allah (سبحانه و تعالى), there will be no excuses to justify your inaction. Watch the video here:
