Successful Are The Believers (Part 1)

'When revelation came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), one could hear what sounded like the buzzing of bees before his face. One day revelation was coming to him, he faced the Qiblah, raised his hands and said: 'O Allah! Increase us, do not diminish us. Favour us, do not withhold from us, make us pleased and be pleased with us.' He (ﷺ) said: 'Ten Ayah were revealed to me, whoever abides by them shall enter Paradise (and they are): 'Successful indeed are the believers...' until the completion of the Ayaat'

The ten Ayaat being referred to by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) are the first ten Ayaat of Surah Al-Mu’minoon (Surah number 23 in the Qur’an). 10 short Ayaat, which will guarantee a person’s entry in to Jannah if they can learn them and most importantly live by them.

In the first of the Ayaat Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala begins with a strong statement.

‎قَدْ أَفْلَحَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

Allah declares that the Believers have already succeeded.

There are several ways of saying success in Arabic but in this case the particular word used is أَفْلَحَ. The type of success this is describing is success that is achieved after a long period of work. Like the farmer who plants the seed and needs to nurture it for months before he sees the fruits of his effort. Our actions in this world are seeds which we plant, some of the fruits we will see in this world, but the real fruits of our efforts will be in the Aakhira.

Right from the beginning we as believers are being given the good news of success, however it is also a reminder that success will only be granted to the one who makes an effort to try and achieve it.

Allah will now go on to describe seven qualities of the believers, qualities which will entitle the believer to attain the success that Allah emphasises so much in this one brief but powerful ayah.
