Look here, this ayah is basically saying that we must be thankful to Allah and if we aren’t, it equals punishment, and we should make sure that we are very thankful to Him.

Allah says in surah al-Nisa':
'... whoever commits a sin will be repaid for it ...' [123]
al-Qurtubi mentioned the following in his tafsir of this ayah:

1. Gratitude directs the heart toward Allah
When a person is truly grateful, they acknowledge that everything

Ungratefulness is a vice. Allah SWT has made it crystal clear that man (and jinn) were created for worship (of Allah SWT). As the saying goes, 'you were created for worship; don't digress'. Somewhere else in the Quran, man is directly addressed and asked as to what made him transgress from the merciful Lord. It is this ungratefulness that ultimately leads man to vice. He loses the idea of his own human-ness and the purpose for which he was created. When this happens, the world is unleashed upon him and he (the man) gets engrossed in futile things until the grave (the angel of death) calls him back by the express permission of Allah SWT. Having been engrossed in petty things and enslaving him

In the multiplicity of sins it seems that everything stems from ungratefulness.
