'They will hear it drawing in its breath when they are thrown in. It blazes forth,' — M.A.S. Abdel Haleem I was discussing grammatical nuances with
Basit Minhasregarding this ayah, and I don't want to bore you with the technicalities of it all. But what I can say is that there is some 'gramnastics' (what I call grammatical gymnastics) happening here. And at first, it seems futile and pointless, but when you actually think about it, the meaning becomes more intense. Without the gramnastics, the meaning is simply 'they will hear its roaring', as Dr. Mustafa Khattab aptly puts it. And the meaning would still be frightening enough for anyone with any sense. However, if we are to stay true to the gramnastics, then Prof. Abdel Haleem's translation offers a closer interpretation: 'They will hear it drawing in its breath.' Here, the implication of a living, breathing, dynamic monster of a fire is painted, and this is continuous while they are being tossed in the fire. This, of course, adds to the horror of the fire, as if the fire is welcoming them with the drawing of its breath in anticipation. It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: 'The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times, Paradise will say: 'O Allah, admit him to Paradise.' And whoever seeks protection from Hell three times, Hell will say: 'O Allah, protect him from the Fire.'' Sunan an-Nasa'i 5521
