Then, He accepted their repentance, that they might repent (unto Him). Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful.] بسم الله! سبتمبر - ٢٥ / ١٧ الصلاة والسلام على نبينا محمد وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين ! السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته Reflection ! When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم commanded the Muslims to march for the Battle of Tabuk, it was not an ordinary expedition. The enemy was the Byzantine Empire( one of the world’s greatest powers at that time). The call to leave behind their homes, their families, their wealth and comfort was a direct test of sincerity, sacrifice and loyalty to Islam and the Muslim community. Almost everyone at that time (who was able ) responded, except the hypocrites ( منافقين who made excuses ) and also three sincere companions: Kaʿb ibn Malik, Hillal ibn Umayyah and Murarah ibn al-Rabi . They were true believers of course with sincere hearts and not among the منافقين hypocrites of that time but their decision to remain behind without a valid reason was serious. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, with Allah ‘s will and guidance, ordered the community to socially boycott them for ( ٤٠) forty days. No one spoke to them or included them, until their isolation brought them to deep reflection, sincere repentance and eventually forgiveness from Allah, as mentioned in the Qur’an Al- Kareem ( 9:118) This decision by Prophet صلی اللّٰہ علیہ وآلہ وسلّم was not harsh rather it served several purposes. First of all, it teaches us the idea of Accountability. They had to face the consequences of their choice just as they had distanced themselves from the community at a time of hardship. Secondly, it brings the idea of تزكية النفس (self-purification ).The boycott was a spiritual cleansing, leading them to humility and turning back fully to Allah, realizing their mistake and sincerely asking Allah سبحانه وتعالى to forgive them. Third, it was definitely a great example and an important communal lesson as it reminded the entire Muslim community that Islam is not only about belief but also requires a sacrifice from you and we need to see it as a collective responsibility, not an obligation of a certain group or a few individuals at the time of need rather it’s a collective effort . As I ponder upon this , I see that it carries a powerful lessons for us: In today’s world, every community whether religious, professional or social we faces challenges that require teamwork. If some people consistently withdraw or choose comfort while others sacrifice their time, money and effort, it weakens the whole group. The Tabuk lesson reminds us that accountability is necessary and should be applicable to each Muslim individual so that everyone values their role ( big or small ) Another realization is that my Deen requires some sort of Sacrifice Beyond my Comfort of home. Just like the companions had to leave behind ease for a greater cause, we too are called to leave our comfort zones for what benefits the Ummah. For example, when there are initiatives to support the needy, protect the oppressed or serve in community projects, stepping forward matters more than words alone. If we apply this into our lives Today, absence from responsibility may not be a battlefield, but it could be ignoring prayers, neglecting my obligations as a family member as well as the obligation of امر بالمعروف و نهي عن المنكر , or failing to stand up for justice and speak the truth when it comes to straight forward matters in Islam. When we fail to stand up for حق or chose not to show up, we can’t expect the blessings of unity, strength and honor to remain intact. At the end, the most important idea that I get is that we need to be hopeful with regards to Allah ‘s mercy and our Repentance. Because this incident is a great reminder to us all that even sincere believers can make mistakes but through humility, repentance and patience صبر , Allah سبحانه وتعالى opens the door of forgiveness and restores their honor. Takeaway Message : The boycott at Tabuk was not harshness, but Allah ‘s decree and His way of showing that true faith requires sacrifice, responsibility and accountability. In our times, it inspires us to rise above personal comfort and actively support everything that is necessary to Deen ‘s existence and establishment and a possible way to raise awareness about our Deen ,with in our community as well as the Ummah because when the community struggles, our absence speaks louder than our excuses. Jazakum Allahu khairyn for your time to read this. بارك الله فيكم
