A few days ago, I witnessed a heartwarming scene - a group of children teaching each other how to pray. The young instructor, barely eight years old, was patiently guiding her four-year-old student through the intricacies of prayer.

The student's giggles echoed through the air as she struggled to grasp the sequence of bowing (Ruku') and prostration (sujud), her eyes sparkling with curiosity. 'Why do we keep doing it this way?'. It seemed a mere physical exercise to her as she was unaware of the spirituality of salah yet. As I watched, I couldn't help but ponder the state of my own prayers. When one of the people of the cave returned to the city to get food, he was asked to be careful to not be discovered, so for them the worst possible scenario would be to be discovered. But Allah is the best planner because he made them be discovered so that they could be honored.

Sometimes we pray to avoid a test, while it is through this test that Allah reward us. We need to be careful not to speak or complain too early in the face of difficulties because Allah is the best planner.

This verse reminds a timeless truth: Tyrants may build empires, but Allah builds legacies.

Pharaoh had power, palaces, and armies—but no barakah, no mercy, and no truth. The oppressed had chains, scars, and silent prayers—but they had sabr. And through that sabr, Allah made them leaders, heirs, and examples for generations.

Earlier in the same Surah (7:129), the Children of Israel, weary and broken, asked Prophet Musa:

"We have always been oppressed—before and after you came to us (with the message)."

To this, Musa replied:

"Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land to see what you will do."

One of the key lessons we take from Ramadan, given that we are ordered to continue to fast each and every day of Ramadan until the end, is steadfastness. These are not disjointed days, and neither is fasting optional on a day of our choosing . This momentum without a break teaches us the importance of constancy and consistency, something we need to apply to in all of our aspects of worship.

This afternoon, I met with a friend of mine. Our conversation took a turn to discuss childrearing and its connection of how we view our relationship with Allah (SWT). I had mentioned that a few years ago, I met a Muslim lady who masha'Allah had a cute young child, but I noticed that whenever she wanted the child to stop doing something, she would snap, "haram". For almost half an hour, this was the only point he could talk about. He would detail how it would happen, who it would be, under what type of scenery, how he constantly fails to distance himself from this urge.

For a time, I volunteered with Samaritans. A suicide helpline. However, what sets it apart from others is that they don't give advice. Their service wants to support others specifically by listening to them - confidential and without judgement. To volunteer with them, you undergo a course that teaches you what it means to listen. You'd be amazed at how much there is to it and what you can bring through purely your ears.

In Surah Mulk, verse 19, Allah asks us a profound question and calls upon us to reflect on the creatures we see every day: birds.

Some celebrate with large family gatherings, while others have only a few loved ones around..

Some experience warmth and joy, while for others, simply being able to gather is already a blessing..

For some, Eid feels like a new beginning; for others, it is a reminder of time passing and what will be lost..

Yet too often, Eid becomes a stage for comparison of wealth, status, children, and achievements.. However, is this really the essence of Eid, to measure ourself against others?

This kind of comparison is dangerous because it leads us to question why my fate differs from another’s instead of trusting in His wisdom.

Ramadan arrives quietly, yet brings profound lessons. It teaches me about something subtle, yet powerful — TIME... Not just fleeting moments, but a silent creation of Allah that never stops, never waits. It slips through our lives, unnoticed, yet always moving forward.

Everything I own in this life — wealth, health, loved ones — is not truly mine. They are but trusts placed temporarily in my care. This world is not for keeping. It is for passing through.

Each Ramadan I pass through these ayats. I tend to reflect less in Ramadan and focus upon recitation. When Ramadan is over I like to recite more slowly with reflection. I have passed these verses over again and each time they cause me to pause. So many times I have wanted to make and pen a reflection.

Allah tells us about the rain—how He sends it down, how it brings life to the earth after it was dry & lifeless. This is something we see with our own eyes. Ramadan doesn’t leave us when the month ends—it stays with us in the heart that continues to worship. When we fast on an ordinary day, when we open the Quran beyond its nights, when we remember Allah in our daily lives, we keep Ramadan alive within us. Its purpose was never to be a fleeting moment but a renewal, a change that lasts.

The true sign of Ramadan’s impact is not in how we worship during its days and nights, but in what remains afterward. If we hold onto its spirit—through fasting, prayer, and remembrance—then Ramadan is not over. It lives in us, guiding us back to Allah, reminding us that every day is an opportunity to return to Him.

You know, I recently learned something really insightful about the word "Fitna." Now that I think of this verse, I realize that my entire existence is defined within it. This is one of the most profound and terrifying verses I have ever contemplated. The Lord of the Heavens and the Mighty Throne—my Creator—has already declared that humankind is in great loss. Then who am I to deny this reality? Who am I to turn away in arrogance or seek refuge in illusions? Who am I to think that my prayers and deeds alone are enough to save me from this loss?

When others give criticism to benefit you, take it to improve yourself and say Alhamdulilah. And if others are attacking you and belittling you, say Alhamdulilah because the amount of reward that is adding up on your scales for being patient and gracious in the hereafter is with Allah. and that is better for you.
