Abu Hurayrah narrates: The poor people came to the Prophet (saws) and said: 'The people of riches have gone off with the highest ranks and the everlasting pleasure because of their wealth. They pray like we pray, and they fast like we fast, but they have a surplus of resources with which they perform Hajj, ‘Umrah, Jihad, and charity.' The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: 'Shall I not inform you of an affair by which if you were to take hold of it, you would catch up to those who have surpassed you; and none after you would catch up to you; and you would be the best of those among whom you live, save those who do the same? Say: ‘Subhân Allah’ and ‘al-Hamdu lillâh’ and ‘Allahu Akbar’ thirty-three times after each prescribed prayer.' [The narrator says]: 'So we differed among ourselves; some said that we are to make tasbeeh thirty-three times, and tahmeed thirty-three times, and takbeer thirty-four times. So I returned to [Abu Sâlih] and he said: ‘You say: Subhân Allah, and al-Hamdu lillah, and Allahu akbar until all of them have been said thirty-three times.’' [Agreed upon: Narrated by al-Bukhari (843) in this wording, and Muslim (595)]
