Khâlid b. ‘Umayr al-‘Adawi narrates: ‘Utbah b. Ghazwân delivered a sermon to us. He praised Allah and extolled Him, and then said: 'To proceed: this worldly life has promised its own end, soon to be cut short! The only portion left of it is like the leftover water that a man tries to salvage of his vessel. You all will move on from it to a realm that has not end, so move on with whatever good you can find. It was mentioned to us that a rock will fall from the edge of Hell, and it will plummet for seventy years without ever hitting any basin; but by Allah, it will most certainly be filled! Are you perplexed? It had also been mentioned to us that between the two panels of the doors of Paradise is the distance of a forty-year journey! And a day will come when it is filled with crowds. 'I remember when I was just one of seven people with the Messenger of Allah (saws). We had no food besides the leaves on the trees, and so our gums tore. I once found a cloak, and I split it between me and Sa‘d b. Mâlik - I used half of it as a lower garment, and he used half of it as a lower garment. Now it has become that there is not a single one of us who is not a governor of some city. I take refuge with Allah from seeing myself as great, while Allah sees me to be worthless! There has never been any prophethood except that it faded and turned into kingship. You will certainly come to know and experience the leaders after us. [Authentic: Narrated by Muslim (2967)]
