Sometimes people do the worst things. They act unethically, make deliberately hurtful comments, or cause harm. And the natural human tendency is that when someone treats us badly, we start backing away from them and avoid helping them.
But those who continue to help despite receiving bad treatment or hurtful reactions are the true servants of Allah. That is the peak form of عبودية (servitude), because in the ayah, the introduction of Khidr عليه السلام was:
فَوَجَدَا عَبْدًا مِّنْ عِبَادِنَا آتَيْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمْنَا مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا
The story of Musa عليه السلام and Khidr عليه السلام shows that although both were chosen people of Allah, Musa عليه السلام still went to him as a student. Khidr عليه السلام did not merely possess extraordinary knowledge or sciences; rather, he had the ability to carry out Allah’s commands without dragging his own ego or self into them.
When he damaged the boat, he did not feel ashamed because he knew it was necessary. When he killed the boy, he did not allow personal emotions to interfere with divine wisdom. And when he rebuilt the wall for people who had humiliated them and refused them hospitality, he did not let his ego say, “I was mistreated here, so I will not help these people.”
And that is the true essence of being a servant of Allah.
