In the Name of Allah — A Reflection

Bismillah means “In the name of Allah.” It reminds us that every good beginning should start with His name, because He is our Creator and the One who has power over all things.

Just as a person may be known through their family name, we too belong to Allah, the One who created us. Therefore, beginning our actions with His name is a reminder of where we come from and upon Whom we truly depend.

When we begin something by saying Bismillah, we acknowledge that success does not come from our strength alone. Allah creates the means, opens the doors, and sends people to help us. Sometimes, after completing a task, we thank the person who helped us and say, “Thank you, I could do it because of your help.” And indeed, we should appreciate people. But we should also remember that Allah is the One who made that person a means of help for us.

So, we should begin every good matter in the name of Allah and, when it is completed, return our gratitude to Him as well. Because ultimately, He is the Creator of every means, every opportunity, and every source of help.

Surah An-Naml — Ayah 19

“So Solomon smiled at her words and said, ‘My Lord! Inspire me to always be thankful for Your blessings which You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and to do good deeds that please You. And admit me by Your mercy into the company of Your righteous servants.’”
