The Prophet of Mercy: His Unwavering Concern for Believers

The Prophet of Mercy, Muhammad (peace be upon him), displayed a remarkable level of care, concern and compassion for believers. Through his actions and teachings, he demonstrated profound empathy, vigilance, and compassion for the welfare of believers in all times and places.

This verse describes the Prophet (peace be upon him) as:

1- A messenger from among yourselves 2- Your suffering distresses him 3- He is deeply concerned for you 4- He is very compassionate and very merciful -

1- 'A messenger from among yourselves'

Allah describes the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as being 'from among you' (Quran 9:128). The Prophet (peace be upon him) is not here being described as belonging to a particular tribe or of a particular ethnic class, rather this divine declaration underscores the Prophet's humanity and his relatability to his followers. This deep connection fostered a genuine concern for the well-being of all of his followers right upon till the day of judgement. This is described in a hadeeth where the Prophet peace be upon him said: 'I wish I could meet my brothers. The companions of the Prophet peace be upon him said: Are we not your brothers? He (the Prophet) said: You are my companions, but my brothers are those who have faith in me although they never saw me' [Aḥmad]

2- 'Your suffering distresses him'

The renowned Islamic scholar, Al Razi, explained the extent of the Prophet's concern for believers by stating، 'لا يهمّه إلا شأنكم' nothing other than your welfare concerns him. فهو كالطبيب المشفق والأب الرحيم في حقكم- and so he is like a empathetic physician and compassion father to you. He peace be upon him was careful not to overburden us with too many obligations, such as can be found in the sunnah Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'If I had not found it hard for my followers or the people, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with Siwak for every prayer.'(Bukhari)

3- 'He is deeply concerned for you'

The Prophet Muhammad was unwaveringly committed to seeking out avenues that would bring tangible benefits to his followers. He vigilantly strived to guide them towards actions that would lead to prosperity in this life and the next. Just like an empathetic physician, he willingly embarked upon difficult treatments if they would ultimately result in healing. Similarly, as a compassionate father, he may have administered strict discipline, but within the framework of mercy and compassion, always aiming to nurture their growth. This compassion extends to every aspect of our lives, covering both worldly and spiritual matters. The Prophet's primary objective was to ensure the well-being and betterment of his followers.

4- 'Compassionate and Merciful'

The Prophet Muhammad was described as being extremely compassionate and merciful towards his followers. This can be understood from the following hadeeth Abu Huraira reported God’s messenger as saying, 'Every prophet has a supplication which receives an answer, but whereas every prophet made his supplication in this world, I have kept mine till the day of resurrection to be used in intercession for my people, and if God will, it will reach those of my people who have died without associating anything with God.'(Bukhari)

Understanding these descriptions not only enriches our knowledge of the Prophet Muhammad, but also serves as an inspiration for believers to emulate his characteristics of care and concern towards one another. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Beloved Prophet, his companions and luminous family and all of those who believe and follow in his footsteps until the last day.

جزاكم الله خيرا كثيرا.

Such a compassionate and merciful Prophet, even before Prophethood and as child young and old. He had such a beautiful heart, temperament and outlook of life and people that not even distress, thirst, hunger, rudeness, rejection, abuse, temptations, offerings and war could deter him from his excellent behaviour.
