Bismillah  The Qur’an shows that the story of humanity is the story of covenants. Before time and history, Allah gathered every soul and asked: 'Am I not your Lord?' and we all replied: 'Yes, we bear witness' (7:172). That first covenant is written into our nature. Whether we remember it or not, we are bound to it. From there, covenants continued through prophets and nations. Allah entrusted Banī Isrā’īl with pledge after pledge: 'Hold firmly to what We have given you' (2:63), 'Worship none but Allah, be good to parents, orphans, the needy…' (2:83). When I became a Muslim, a relative of mine told me that I had forgotten where I came from. He told me that he might not be the most religous person, but at least he is loyal to his forefathers - unlike me, who had betrayed everything that matters. These ayahs bring me comfort because they remind me that I'm not the one who forgot where I came from. Our true forefathers are those who submit to Allah. Every dawn is a new beginning for me. I get to renew my covenant with my Creator, I get to charter the course of my day upon what will please my Creator, and avoid inviting His Displeasure. I reinforce the spiritual walls within my self from the first Alhamdulillah on my lips I get to revive and rejuvenate my awe of Him in all His creations I see before me; leading me to the end of my day when I close it with Bismillaah and the hope that I get to do it all over again. In these dark times, an extra day given is a precious Gift that is worth celebrating every day.
