بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم In the two ayahs before this ayah (numbers 68 and 69), Allah SWT describes the major sins a true servants of Allah avoids. These sins appear to be mentioned in order from the worst of the worst major sins to the less-worst major sins (if they can even be placed on a gradient). After all, any major sin is avoided by the true servants of Allah SWT as mentioned in these ayat. The major sins that are mentioned are: invoking a deity with Allah SWT, followed by taking of a human life, and lastly committing adultery. Allah SWT then describes and warns of the severe, despicable and vile torment for such acts that would go on for eternity. Allah SWT then declares the punishment will be multiplied and the sinner abide in humiliation and disgrace. However, after such strong emotional and fear invoking ayah, subhan Allah, we see the grandness and the vastness of Allah's mercy and forgiveness. Allah SWT describes the step-by-step instructions needed to achieve salvation and forgiveness even after committing such despicable major sins. 1. True repentance including genuine regret and desisting from going back; 2. then returning or entering on the true path of Islam; and 3. sincere engagement in good deeds after a complete repentance. Allah's favor is truly grand upon his believers, for after following these steps Allah SWT promises to bless his servants by replacing all the old detestable deeds/sins into honorable actions in this life and good deeds in the next life, inshaAllah. This ayah is a great reminder, the door of repentance to Allah SWT is always open to anyone, the pathway to forgiveness and mercy to Allah SWT is clear, and this is open to anyone that is blessed with guidance and light no matter how severe we view our sins.
