And when We let the people taste mercy, they rejoice therein, but if evil afflicts them for what their hands have put forth, immediately they despair. [30:36] The beauty in this Ayah lies in the difference between إذا and إن إذا - 'WHEN' or 'WHENEVER' - used to indicate the high frequency of occurrence إن - 'IF' - to indicate the possibility of happening As human beings in the test of life, we experience different moments in this worldly life, some are sad, some are happy; some moments are filled with mercy from Allah, and some are loaded with trials and tribulations. However: we tend to over-exaggerate the sad part, the tribulations; we think they are everywhere, and we feel targeted by them. Allah teaches us otherwise: when talking about His mercy, he said: WHEN, because it is guaranteed, consistent, and abundant. There is no doubt about it. إذا is mentioned in the Quran when discussing other known facts that are bound to happen. For example: إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انشَقَّتْ - 84:1 - When the sky has split open إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ - 56:1 - When the Imminent Event will occur, But when referring to the hardships, Allah SWT uses إن , IF, because it MAY or MAY NOT happen; As indicated in another Ayah : وَإِن يَكُ كَاذِبًا فَعَلَيْهِ كَذِبُهُ ۖ وَإِن يَكُ صَادِقًا يُصِبْكُم بَعْضُ الَّذِي يَعِدُكُمْ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي مَنْ هُوَ مُسْرِفٌ كَذَّابٌ - 40:28: If he is a liar, his lie will fall back on himself, and if he is truthful, some of that (punishment) of which he warns you will afflict you. This Ayah is a reminder to us that: 1- Allah's mercy and blessings are all around us, but we tend to victimize ourselves and exaggerate the negatives in our lives 2- That hardships normally come to us as a consequence of our choices (بما قدمت أيديهم - because of what their hands have put forth) 3- The Adab - etiquette - of discussing the good and the bad in our lives: when talking about ease, we should attribute it to Allah (و إذا أذقنا - when we give people the taste of mercy), but when talking about difficulties, it is inappropriate to throw the blame at the divine wisdom of Allah ( و إن تصبهم سيئة - But when a calamity hits them); Allah did not say 'and When Allah sends them a hardship' ... As the messenger PBUH used to say in his beautiful duaa: والخير كله في يديك، والشر ليس إليك And all the good lies in between Your Hands ya Allah, but evil does not get attributed to you...

It also reminds me of a recent post by Imam Ammar AlShukry about the victim mentality & how it impacts dawah:
