Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them - so worship Him and have patience for His worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him? (19:65) Research suggests that there are three necessary components for achieving any set objectives: First, is the need to establish the motivation for change and to set a clear goal. Second, you need to keep track of your habits and progress towards that goal. The third element is willpower. Whether your goal is health related, foregoing a bad habit, studying more Quran, willpower is a critical step to achieving that outcome. I often come across many who have experienced the ‘honeymoon learning Arabic frenzy’, where many students start the journey of Arabic only to drop put due to a lack pf patience, or when the subject matter gets tough. In this regard Imam Al shafi’ advises: : اصْبِرْ عَلَى مُرِّ الْجَفَا مِنْ مُعَلِّمٍ فَإِنَّ رُسُوبَ الْعِلْمِ فِي نَفَرَاتِهِ 'Be patient with the bitterness of learning, for the sweetness of knowledge lies in its depths.' Often a lack of patience, moderation and consistency lead us to forego the once upon-a-time goal we had set for ourselves. It maybe that we started off a particular habit or routine after getting that initial spark of energy from a talk we attended or a heart-opening verse we read or a really inspiring person we met. In this sense, the key to achieving any goal, is to remain consistent by patiently moving towards that goal and by revisiting the motive behind this journey. This is the way we maintain our willpower. Remember to reflect, reflect to remember.
