There is so much I could say about this surah (which is my favourite) and this ayah aswell. But I'll try to keep it short and sweet. So I'm reading this novel about Syrian refugees and it goes over the perilous journeys that these poor souls have had to make and I just felt so sad at how badly they have been let down by humanity. The Muhajiroon also had to flee and they too were refugees. And when you read this ayah in particular, it sums up 13 years of the Prophet's ﷺ life so succinctly through the relationship between the Muhajiroon and the Ansar. (In fact, the whole surah goes into many more aspects of the Prophet's life in Madinah for example the Ahl al-Kitaab, the Munafiqoon, the siege of the Banu Nadir. It is a seerah-rich surah which is why I love it so much – it just takes me back there when I read it. That's why being acquainted with the Seerah is crucial if you hope to understand the Qur'an more deeply.) I digress. Anyways the ayah in question goes over the relationship between the Muhajiroon and the Ansar and the pure, genuine love and comradery they had for one another. What greater honour can there be when Allah SWT declares the purity of your heart. When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Yathrib, he paired up Muhajir and Ansar so that they could support each other and the Ansar were so generous that they would give half of all that they owned to their assignee. This was Prophetic Madinah. This is what compassion is. This is quintessential iman. Their hearts were attatched to Allah and not this world. They knew who provided them with their wealth and who would continue to provide for them even while they were in a state of need themselves. 'They give ˹the emigrants˺ preference over themselves even though they may be in need.' And now consider the rich countries today which are the wealthiest that have ever existed. Where we live such comfortable lives full of consumption. And in our midst we have vile politicians make political capital out of desperate people who are drowining in the Mediterranean along with their families and you ask yourself do these people not have an atom of humanity? The contast between that and the Sahaba is astonishing and you see why they were the chosen and best community within the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ. And after all, they did have the best teacher who inspired them to greatness through his perfect example. I suppose we should be take a leaf out of the City of the Prophet for our own communities and in our own lives. What do we do for refugees and the masaakiin. And although no one is asking us to do so, we should look into our hearts and ask ourselves whether we are prepared to give half of what we have to a fellow believer or is our love of the dunya that intense. 'And whoever is saved from the selfishness of their own souls, it is they who are ˹truly˺ successful.'
